The main criteria is acid soil. They grow here at pH 6 but
would do better at a lower pH. I believe the optimum is about pH5. I you soil
will grow camellias it will be OK. If rhododendrons also do well, so much
the better. They like a sunny position that is damp during bloom season but not
totally undulated with water when dormant in winter. If growing them in pots
take the pot out of the pond in winter.
They need lots of acid fertilizer. Cow manure is good. If
using other animal fertilizer add sulphur to lower the pH.
