Another name  for hypericum is St. John's Wort.  It is widely planted on California freeways since it is so low care.  It is interesting to know it is also used herbally as a remedy for depression.

Two thoughts that came to mind with pin-cushiony yellow flowers were:

Centaurea macrocephala

and

Tanacetum vulgare

You wouldn't happen to have a picture would you?
