Something interesting from one of the old, old
seedling beds.....
With enough open space this year to do some real
playing, I decided to line out some decades old (and unidentified) bearded
seedlings and was surprised by this. I'm guessing that it will be a tall, small
flowered thing and difficult to categorize but having been transplanted this
spring, it's only about 20".
In years past, this would have hit the compost as
soon as it began to open but I'm finding myself intrigued by the historics and
their untapped potential. I won't venture a guess as to what I crossed but
nothing I had at that time looked remotely like this. The veining would have
been enough to catch my imagination, but what I find most interesting is the
glittery golden wire rim on standards, falls, and stylearms.
Finding something to pair it with to bring out
the traits I want to keep (wire rim and veining) and getting rid of the ones I
don't (the mustard beards have to go!) will be a challenge. Ideas
anyone?
