    Yes, that annoying "only for collectors" or "only for specialists" crops up fairly often in British and Northern European writings.  I used to look at that as a form of "snobbism", but I have come to realize that it is due to the climate conditions there.  Just as one reads "can be grown only in bulb frames" doesn't mean a thing to me.  I have seen it related to the regelias.....I. hoogiana, I. korolkowii, and I. stolonifera.....which I grow in the open ground and which achieve "weed" status here because they grow so well. Both Köhlein and Mathew use terms like that.  However, when a similar term is used for oncocyclus iris, I take the term seriously.
