LOL, we call them wooly worms too!  I agree that they are not tent caterpillars.  They are always on the ground, never in trees.  I was just hoping to find their real name <GRIN>

Your speciment reminds me of what we call "wooly worms". WW's are reportedly good indicators of weather for the upcoming winter, depending on the amount of dark/white stripes.

but I'm sure there are any number of species that are not wooly worms that have the bristles like that.
