SIZE NOMENCLATURE

I am confused with the various letters given to the iris plants.
Are the letters AB, BB, IB, SDB, TB etc assigned according to the
habbit of the plant or the size of the flower stem. The last order i
received had 4 different letter groups all within a 4" spread.
I hope someone can help me.
