Just to add my three cents. When my children were very young, we had a time killing routine while my wife was shopping. The kids would name an animal and I would tell them what it ate. When they said horses, my reply was money. Fortunately this was based on observation and the experience of others not personal experience. Most horse owners I have talked to about this have agreed with me.

Now Bill. . .what kind of "4 wheeler" did you have that had "zero
fuel cost and low maintenance?" Every one I've had didn't know about
that zero fuel cost. . .guess I forgot to tell them. . and low
maintenance. . .whew. . .$8 a foot for shoeing and vet checks,
worming, shots, . . .hmmmmm. . . maybe I had the wrong model!!! If I

Well, gosh Doris, I stand corrected. Spect the only consensus we are going to be able to reach on this post is that a new dimension has been added to the routine iris maintenance procedure of pulling Dock out of the flower bed.

However, in the interest of a comprehensive answer, I'm adding to this post a portion of previously communicated, off list treatise addressing maintenance costs.
PREVOUS:
Well, haven't owned so very many horses at once. Been horseless for about 5 years now but ain't never gonna be happy this way. Too, I rarely let reality get in the way of my illusions. Find horses a lot like wives. More than one is kinda hard to handle. They both train you and not vice versa. Maintenance cost for either is about the same.

Some here say you ain't a real cowboy if you can't shoe your own horse, shoot your own dog, or you gotta wife. Well, I know for sure I ain't a real cowboy cause I ain't shot the dog and I still gotta wife.
