Might be the problem, although we haven't used 2-4 D for years and I can't remember if it affects iris like Round-up.  In addition to the 2-4 D Crossbow has another chemical in it but I can't remember what it is.  Interestingly, many different herbicides can have a glyphosate type effect on blooms, even if they don't have glyphosate in them.  It appears to be more of a random event but it still can happen.  My guess, and it is only a guess, is that your flower will bloom "normal" next year.

I did use some CROSSBOW near the bed trying to get rid of wild violets.  Crossbow has 2-4 D, I don't know if this would cause the iris to mutate.
