I suspect that is the case.  In 2007 a gardener in our general area had proliferations on her irises.  I'd not heard of it before, but I saw pictures.

Never seen such a strange branching, a strait stem till halfway up then it splits in 4 branches at the same level.
Hope it is just a maiden bloom oddity!
