Thanks Chuck! I'm in 5b Canadian which is USA Ag zone 4. So I think Can ag zone 3 would be close to a 2 in USA

I actually have a few MDB's in my front shade garden, where it does get early morning sun for a few hours. They all bloom. Sleepy Time is extra lovely in the shade. I guess because of that, I have a self sown iris in amongst the hostas, just across the path. It gets less sun, but looks like it might bloom this year. :)
A few years ago, the powers that be updated the climatic zones. My area went from 3 down to 2b, which I refuse to be. :O However, I think a 3 here is equivalent to your 4. If you've got a purple bud on an MDB, and you're in Zone 3, maybe you should re-evaluate your zone! (Big smile!) I have no obvious signs of even a stalk yet, here in Zone 4 (and a half. . . )! :-)
But, I see promises! yay!

On Mother's Day, I noticed MDB Glenwillow was setting buds above the foliage, but lots of other MDB's are starting to form buds, as I can see the swelling near the base of the foliage. Same for some SDB's as well, including your Ruby Eruption. Plus, tonight I saw one of the pumila's now has a purple bud, whereas I never even saw a bud this morning. Had to go back & look at it a couple of times. Iris bucharica, a juno. It opened two days ago. Beat the first first of MDB iris which opened today. First time bucharica was first to open. Chuck Chapman Guelph, Ontario, Canada |
