You plant iris seed directly into the ground? I've read that iris seed,
programmed for survival, can still sprout 25 years after they originally
hit the ground. I'm afraid to plant in the soil. But, it would make
transplanting a thing of the past.
I did it with the first seeds that I ever harvested. I planted in the
spring and got about 30% germination. I was such a newbe I didn’t know
anything about what I was doing and planted directly into virgin ground
which turned into good adobe brick and killed most of them. Since then
I’ve planted seeds in pots, but I’m tired of transplanting and losing
most to summer heat. This winter I’m planting into a well amended bed
again. I will plant on both sides of soaker hoses and cover the rows
with a seed blanket held up by wire hoops about eight inches above them.
They can come up any time this winter that they feel like it, but I’ll
bet most are up in a month. I will leave the seed blanket on until warm
weather next spring. I’m sure I’ll be peeking though=
