Re: unknown?&book suggestions?

Thank you Griff for getting this info out to us.  I for one am looking forward to his book. Last year he and Ginny was in Phoenix and gave a very interesting talk on genetics as well as a slide presentation showing us his introductions and seedlings.  That was when I first heard about his up and coming book. I've been waiting for it ever since.

Don and Ginny were heavily involved in preparing for and carrying off the national convention this year.  That, together with Don's teaching at Shenandoah U., has slowed down the book writing.  Ginny says they're looking forward to the winter months for more time to work on the book, and hope even to finish it this winter.  She says (and we can pardon a wife's pride) that Don's chapter on genetics is "fantastic".  Ginny herself has a flair for writing, so my guess is that she's substantially involved in the book's production. --  Griff

I agree with Gerry here.  It is in-depth and laid out pretty well.  The first time I read through the genetics portion of it though.......... it went over my head.  When I reread it - it made for easier reading and easier to understand.  There is a chart in there too which shows you your chances of bringing out recessive genes, and the probability of other genetic factors.
 
I understand Don Spoon is suppose to be coming out with a book this year - with much of it based on genetics.  Has anyone heard when it is due out?
 
Otherwise............ the best book on genetics would probably be the one you could write yourself.....................as you study and become more familiar with your own iris and the crosses you make.  It's like painting................practice, practice, practice............. the more you do the more knowledgeable you become, resulting in better crosses and better work.

I will buck the trend and recommend "The World of Iris." Conditionally,
at least.

It is still, by far, the best overall reference book available. But, if
you want just info on which cultivars to use as parents for which
traits, it is out of date.

So, I suggest TWoI for background genetics, and talk with hybridizers
for current hybridizing info.

BTW, the specialty books on Louisianas, Japanese, and Siberians are all
quite good.
