This trait like purple based foliage varies with climatic conditions. I have seen Iris and pictures of Iris that have really dark purple, almost black spathes. I would bet 'Ominous Stanger would do that under the right conditions. I have also grown Iris purpureobracteata in warm springs and barely seen the effect, even though it is capab;le of very dark purple spathes. I think it is a neat trait and would love to breed for it.

'Ominous Stranger' Innerst 1993. I posted this picture to the Wiki a couple of weeks ago because I thought it was a very distinctive feature to help ID this iris.
Hope this is what you are looking for. I remember seeing TBs with purple bracts below their flowers but cannot remember the cultivar names. Does anyone know about these and have photos I could use in the Iris Encyclopedia? I know the species I. purpureobracteata has this character but I am looking for the TB hybrids that developed this independent of that species. Can anyone help?
