[PHOTO] Rot advancement through a rhizome

This picture shows the rot advancement through a rhizome from the most mature 
end to the leaf end. The bottom section of rhizome is inverted and a mirror 
image of the top section. Advancement path is more pronounced on the bottom 
portion of the rhizome and continues through the rhizome to what was once the 
leaf end. Erwinia again appears to erupt to the surface (1). The advancement 
on the top side appears to advance only to (3). Discolored area near the leaf 
end appears to be the Erwinia attacking the rhizome tissue from the leaf end 
(2) perhaps after it has consumed its available food in that area. The 
greater penetration of rot on the mature end is obvious.

Healthy sectioned rhizomes have a noticeably yellow tint compared to the gray 
exhibited by this infected rhizome. It is possible that gray tissue is dead 
tissue and not necessarily infected. I have no way to confirm.

This rhizome is my candidate for "Ugly Iris of the Year" title. It is not 
expected to recover from the operation. <g>
