Francesca, roof rats were a serious pest in one part of
the Valley of the Sun two years ago.
They lived in citrus trees and ate the fruit. People in the infested area had to pick
and dispose of all their citrus fruit.
I think they did a lot of trapping too. There were fewer of them last year, and
I didn’t hear about them this year.
I sure don’t want them around my place. Francelle Edwards -----Original Message----- Judy, I try to get my info from the 'horse's mouth' so
to speak. When I took my irises there before mailing, I asked the
Agricultural Inspector about them. He gave me copies of some literature that
they have in their files for distribution. They look like a cross between the
cute field mouse and the rat. They have the ears of the former and the long
tail and size of the the latter. Knowing that they don't spread disease, except
maybe for rabies if they get bitten, I feel a little less wheezy about them. We
have never seen one and the only evidence we have of them is that they leave
their droppings behind. We are trying one of those electronic gizmos you can
plug in. It does takes several weeks before it is effective, altho I don't
understand the reasoning behind this. So far they seem to go only into the
greenhouse and the pump house, areas where we do not go that frequently except
at iris time. No problem, in the iris group one better not be thin skinned
(sic!) and smiles back to you all. Francesca
