I think what Colleen meant to say was 500 pixels wide or high which, at 72 dpi would make it about a 4 x 6 inch photo.

Well one of Margie's photos at 500 dpi would really distress most. It would be about 450 kb.
 
All web photos should be 72 dpi or less. Dpi is dots per inch for printing. Your monitor can only reproduce the maximum of 72, more is a waste.
 
Resize to about 7" x 6.5 or somewhere close at 72 dpi and you will be under 50 kb.
