Hi, Vicki  --  That iris doesn't look ungainly to me.  It looks well-balanced and beautiful.  I'd guess it didn't get a ribbon because of the bias against more than 2 blooms open on a plant at the same time.  I count eight buds (and maybe a ninth at the terminal?), with four of them open.  The symmetry would have been even better if the third bud on the main stalk hadn't opened, but nature isn't perfect. --  Griff

Multiple stalks are more common on iris derived from I. aphylla's.
Took this to a show back in 2001.  It also carries multiple buds, not single ones as you mentioned. Of course, it didn't even rate a ribbon...too ungainly, but it brought lots of comments.  Every so often we get multiple stalks.
