In this seedling it looks to me as if top epidermis has Ae (anthocyanin enhancement ) and botton layer doesn't.

Seems like that's the case for the "umbrata"/variegatas - darker "spot"
on the surface.

You think it's an extra layer of cells just in the dark part or a
pattern of light and dark in the top layer?

<Interesting how it is so dark on top of falls and so light underneath.
