I do not know the name. I got a balb and
planted it. and VOILA!!!! IT grew... I live in Duarte, CA now and maintain two
places. One in Duarte and my house in AZ. The house was just built end of May. I
was told by landscape designer, that no planting can occur in AZ until mid
October. I love irises and want to plant them in at the AZ house.. I was
sending this globel to find out how to do it correctly..Here is a
photo I took of an Iris from Descanso Gardens, in La Canada Flintridge,
last spring,2005

Awesome Blossom
Keith -
Is this photo of Awesome Blossom in Calif or is it just a "Calif irises"
picture? Either way - very nice blooms.
By the way, I am in Chatsworth, CA - in the San Fernando Valley.
Also hot like the Central Valley. I grow most of mine in full sun and
with fairly little water.
Thought I would send a photo of mine
California Irises. What do you think?

Keith,
Welcome to the group. You will find several other AZ growers in the
group who should be able to very specific advice. My experience in the
California Central Valley is that afternoon shade would be the ideal. If
the irises have to be in full sun, expect the foliage to be ragged and
have burnt tips at the very least.
Since this in a photo oriented group, I am included a photo
of Awesome Blossom (Black, 2000). Size of the blossom is what makes
it awesome.

Good Afternoon Everyone,
I want to introduce myself as a new member.
My name is Keith. I just had a house built in Surprise/Phoenix, AZ. What
zone is Phoenix in and what is your advise to grow beatiful Irises
in the Sonoran Desert climate?

Seedlings
Betty, Colorado is Zone 4/5. We usually get
temps during stock show time, mid January to 10 to 20
below. The seeds are out in the elements in pots from Oct
to February when I put plastic over a little "A"
frame. See attached photo. I provide just
enough heat to keep the nights above 40. The seed starts
germinating about two weeks after covering.
