No, Bill, they're not fused.  I've taken a couple of photos of the reverse side of the fan so that the bases of all three stalks can be seen.  They emerge from the rhizome side by side.  The first photo is of an upper portion, so that the three stalks can be easily seen, despite the fact that the stalk on the left tends to disappear in shadow midway.  The second photo focuses on the base.  The brownish coloration near the base of the stalk on the left is leaf material.  --  Griff
