Re: perrieri

Neil,
Thanks for the Iris perrieri info. Actually, after I posted the
question, I did some google searching and then searched the old "Iris
Talk" archives. It appears that Iris furcata and Iris perrieri have
been considered, at times, to be synonyms for Iris aphylla. But it
also has been mentioned that they are diploids, whereas typical
aphylla clones are tetraploid. I can't remember offhand which was
which, but the bloomstalks are very different for the two. One is
branched/forked at the rhizome with mostly green spathes. The other
is unbranched and has a lot of purple on the spathes. I can't wait to
see the blooms and try out some hybridizing.

As for the white pallida X suaveolens seedlings, I won't know a lot
about their fertility until I've worked with them a little more (this
is first bloom for the majority of them). But I did get modest seed
to set on the few blooms last year. So far, that seed hasn't
germinated. Those blooms occurred during the heat of summer; but I
had noticed that they didn't have any pollen. I haven't gotten to get
a good look at all of these newly opened seedlings, but I have seen
ample pollen on at least one of the early opened purple ones. And
I'll be out there today, checking the rest.

I'm pretty sure that the Kupari white pallida is a recessive white.
It hasn't given me any completely white offspring in crosses. Only
purple selfs, bitones, amoenas and plicatas.

And by the way, I've got a batch of seedlings getting ready to bloom
from Kupari X Iris variegata (Beardsley clone). Last year one bloomed
and it was a plicata. It should be intersting to see what the rest
look like. That plicata seedling didn't produce any pollen and I
couldn't get any seed to set on it either.

I'm looking forward to more discussions about the diploid bearded
crowd. So, stay tuned.

Tom
