I don't have a copy of 1929 checklist but suspect information in it was also based on the information in the BAIS #13 and was omited from 1939 as it was inacurate. Just a guess as in the forward to the 1939 checklist Ethel Peckham says "... the purpose of this book is to correct all the mistakes in our Bulletins (which have been legion, the mistakes, I mean) and those in the former check lists."
The $ sign means "possible superseded and about to be obsolete" which in view of the "black list" etc I would take to mean that it wasn't considered to be the best example of that colour and type and many people were growing better cultivars. Not that the name was used for a diferent cultivar.
