Help request -thrips?

I'm sorry this is off-topic, but given the group's collective
gardening experience I thought it would be a good resource.

I am experiencing an 95% failure of some tulips I planted last year.
Some bulbs never produced any growth, the majority grew to about an
inch or two above the soil with obviously stressed foliage. The growth
can be pulled away from the bulb - easily, and the bulbs are all mush.
I consulted a local nursery and their answer was thrips. I have never
encountered this - or if I have, never to this extreme. Can anyone
confirm this diagnosis?
The bulbs didn't exhibit any questionable traits when I received them,
but I suspect they were affected. I am concerned that I have
introduced a major problem into my garden.

Any comments would be a great help.

Thanks in advance

Jeff Warren
