Jamie,

I"m growing it in a deep planter with rich well-drained soil. The planter is located in dappled sun.

Here is a quote from Jim Murrain in this group in 2005,
It must have been a mild winter as Iris speculatrix is blooming this year. This is barely hardy here, I'm sure it would prefer zone 7 or 8.
Here is another quote from 2010
I moved I. speculatrix a few years ago as it was not doing very well. It seems 
to like it's new location. I have never had more then two stalks before. This year 
there are six. It is marginal here as the leaves are always damaged in the winter. 
It wants to be evergreen. With a mulch of leaves and ample snow cover last winter 
it looks great this spring.
In zone 9, it is evergreen and is very happy.
