If I were shown just the seeds I would lean toward a Louisiana or pseudacorus. Given a choice between virginica and versicolor both the seeds and the flower look much more like virginicas than versicolors. I was told second hand that Tony Huber notes that one of the blue flags has three chambers to the ovary and the other six chambers and this is a fail safe way of telling. I suspect that versicolor has six but I have been lazy and not checked out this character in the literature or in person. I would be interested in others experiences with this character. It would seem to be a fool proof way of separating these two.
