Re: Iris Madonna

Found the following in the AIS Bulletin online archives. Plus other sources

As a further aside, 'Golden Bow' is very like I. x albicans (has anyone noticed this?), but it is yellow.  Is there any more detailed record of the parentage than what shows in the AIS registry?.  I have hoped that more detailed records are recorded somewhere by the Sass family for their crosses?  If species were used to create 'Golden Bow', it ?might? shed some light on the original parentage of I. x albicans.  As a group, I. x albicans, 'Madonna', 'Kochii', and 'Golden Bow' stand out from everything else I've ever grown.  Plus, they look good planted together (at least the three I have do

'Golden Bow ( H. P. Sass, R. 1935) IB. Early bloom. Color Class-Y4D. Sass-J. 1935; Patttison 1936.
Iris Lutescens. Lamarek X TB].

To take the yellows in the order of their yellowness, we must
begin with the richest and finest yellow yet shown in any iris
I have ever sighted, Hans Sass' intermediate, Golden Bow. I
had not believed that a more brilliant yellow was possible or
likely in an iris than that of Crysoro but Golden Bow is richer
and more glowing and with a remarkable heavy, velvety substance.
A slight undertone of brown was detected by some
observers which they believed gave it its richness of color. This
is a stunning bit of color.

GOLDEN BOW (R. p~ Sass '35)-Striking a~d effective with
Gentius. Excellent form with a smooth velvety finish (Ia.).

When we returned home we found the iris season just opening.
Gentius, Cosette and Golden Bow made a beautiful early group,

1938 April AIS Bulletin Pg. 70 (Gersdorff notes)
Golden Bow, a deep yellow extra
early intermediate, about the best of the deep yellows in this type;
