If you check on my website, you will find the iris Cast Ashore, another Robusta. Very similar in many ways to Gerald Darby.

If you have a photo of seed pods , I would like to see them. The Robustas are typically covered with seed pods, and when mature,  droop down.  And are very large seed pods, much like pseudacorous.  Very tricky to  clean off all the seed pods. Some lie down right on ground, under foliage. So in a garden, seedlings can easily grow up  and get mixed up as original  plant.

Both I. virginica and I versicolor are usuall a light blue-purple  and both usually have veined rather then solid coloured flowers.  If you check description of GD, it specifically says veining. Yours has a very solid and very dark flower.  Very unusual to get such a dark  Rovusta, especially in first generation. And to get rid of veining?

Stem colour can also vary from season to season, and from climate to climate. Sometimes almost a black.

When you see two registrations of names, it means the first registration has been released, usually on promise/knowledge  that none of the first one has been released. 

Robustas. are called that for a reason, extreemly vigorous   (very robust) . when you grow them beside  virginica and versicor you can see strong family resemblence.  But bigger and more vigorous, and almost always with veining.

Until now,  all the photos of Gerald Darby  that I have seen match mine. Some darker, but  still with same balance of falls to standards, same shape, same veining.

Did you see the stems on mine? The last picture of the stem is from my iris. They are precisely the dark red purple that Claire Austin describes. The stems and the purple leaves were what led me to believe I had received the correct iris that I purchsed from two well known companies in the US. This one is the picture of the stem from my iris:

I know you know your irises. But please humor me, by telling me how you know for sure the one on your website is Gerald Darby?

If you do a Google search for Gerald Darby you will come up with many pictures of the iris I have. And many other pictures of irises like you sell. It appears the one in Claire Austins book is not the same as yours, Chuck. It appears more like mine. Also if one were to check Daves Gardens Plantfiles, the irises on there as Gerald Darby appear to be the same as mine.

Thank you everyone else, also. I am familiar with the description, and also am familiar with robustas. The description is just vague enough that it could be either of the two irises.
