You should see my pond.  It's not so big... but it's big enough that I can't (won't) reach most of the irises.  And you're absolutely right, they reseed like crazy.  I gave up hope long ago of identifying who was who.  The naughty Louisianas jumped their pots and grew where ever they wanted.  The only one I know for sure is the variegated Japanese iris Silverband.  Of course, when they bloom I can tell you what's what.  But that's only for a few weeks a year.

I'm a very irresponsible iris grower.  ;-)

I think one of the reasons for this confusion (Gerald Darby and others) is that many, especially beardless iris, self sow and the seedlings get mixed with the original and so are never properly identified again.
