Re: Iris perrieri ?

 

It was sent to me from Ottawa, Ont, Canada which is about Z5.
 
I'll ask the sender if it was grown by him, or if it was ordered in for a local sale.

El; It is possible that this is I. perrieri but from just this picture I would be hesitant to say for sure. Perrieri has basal branching like an iris aphylla but is a 40 chromosome plant. I tried to grow it in Missouri zone 5 and it died in the winter. making me believe that it would not grow North of zone 6 or 7. Although it comes from a mountain in France I am not sure that the climate there is very harsh. From pictures  and my plant it seems to have leaves that are rather strongly ribbed compared to Iris aphylla and as I remember it did not go that dormant in winter like aphylla. I believe it is much closer related to Iris sabina another 40 chromosome Iris than to aphylla which has 48 chromosomes. Nigel Service is the expert on this plant but he is not on the internet that I know of. What is the provenance of your plant?

In 2006, I was sent I. perrieri.  Before I ever saw it bloom, the label went missing.
 
This morning, I was reading the description on the SIGNA site, and wondered if this unknown, that bloomed for the first time this year, could be I. perrieri.
