Re: is this I. sanguinea or I. siberica?

Thanks, Yuri.  This has been my growing suspicion.  The two groups of plants are quite distinct in the garden, with the sanguinea plants looking darker in general, although the extremely close relationship is obvious.  I suppose a gene anaylsis may see them as sub-species, with the Japanese plants having developed in isolation to sanguinea.

Hi Jamie,
To my mind it is true Iris sibirica with its typical bracts.
Your another photo "I. siberica 1.jpg " show very typical Iris sanguinea.

This is a seedling I raised from collected seed (Germany).  I have simply considered it to be I. siberica, but the bracts are more I. sanguinea.  It may be a hybrid, as both species are common and mixed in Germany (most of Europe, I would think!).  I doubt we have true wild populations anymore.

Any opinions?
