Sean: I think this is a great idea. I probably would not be able to do such myself, but when I was a college student I spent many miles searching for wildflowers. One spring break I traveled 10,000 miles in a big circle across the gulf, down into Florida and back through the Appalachians with a group of taxonomy students. I also used to take forays into Mexico. Although the number of Iris I saw was limited Enjoying all the flora was great and seeing things in their native habitat gave me ideas on how to grow them.

It's my understanding that those species don't transplant well at bloom time, though I don't speak from experience. I believe SPCNI does field trips, though presumably not to locations where plant collection would be permitted.
Has SIGNA done field trips in the past? I'd drive to the west coast to get the opportunity to see and photograph most of the species in a single trip. Or down south to see the louisianas.
