Guatemala & Honduras hold a special little treasure called Cobana guatemalensis. It's a member of the Iris Family and it's the sole species of its genus and it only occurs in these two countries. Until recently I've not been able to find photos of it online... but I checked again & got lucky. http://challenguate.tumblr.com/post/107351155115/cobana-guatemalensis-iridaceae-the-only-member http://fm2.fieldmuseum.org/plantguides/results.asp?family=&genus=cobana&intPerPage=25 To me it is superficially similar to the Trigridia and Alophia species that I've grown but the flower shape seems rather different. Comparing it to photos online it actually looks quite similar to Eleutherine bulbosa from Argentina. Anyway, I just wanted to share these pics & see if anyone here has had the pleasure of encountering it in real life. Tropical amaryllids seem to grow well for me as houseplants, so I wonder if tropical irids like this could, too. Dennis in Cincinnati |
