Chuck,
I'm glad you're thinking that (about Iris variegata
being the source of the plicata pattern). I've
considered that possibility also. Maybe it is some
variegata gene(s) that only produces that pattern in
combination with certain pallida gene(s). It may be
that neither of the species alone has all that is
required for the pattern to be expressed. I'm
interested to see if either of the other 'Kupari'
crosses (suaveolens or cengialtii) produces any
plicatas in the F2.
As for existence of glaciatas in MTB class, I'd have
to take your word for it. I've always just assumed
that some of the plain yellows and whites were
glaciatas; and thought that it was the dominant
anthocyanin inhibitor that didn't exist at the diploid
level. And it wouldn't surprise me at all, if the old
historic plicatas (like 'Swertii', and others -- none
of which I've grown), might be products of Iris
variegata introgression into a primarily pallida
background.
I think you might be on to something. I'll definitely
keep you up to date as any of these seedling groups
begins to bloom.
I'll attach a picture of one of the plicata seedlings.
You should be able to view it at the Mallorn archives,
if not directly. Note the pattern is especially
evident on the unopened buds.

interest would be the F2 of the Kupari x varigatae and
also back crosses to original parent. What I'm looking
for is information on the possible origin of the pl
gene. I. pallida has been considered the origin yet
there is no glaciatas in the MTB class and no pallida
show plicata patterning. I'm considering that I.
variagata is the true source.
