Re:plicata Pattern Rim vs Veins & genetics

To illustrate what I've been talking about I have posted two sets of photos on the iris-photo list which can be accessed at hort.net by anyone.
There are two MDB, one with a rim and one with veins, both of the same plicata genotype. The differece being that the one with veins also has the pumilla spot.

The second set of photos has Ozark Skies, an MTB with a rimmed plicata pattern. For this you can substitute any diploid plicata with rims. The second photo is a seedling from Welch's reward X Iris variegata regina. the seedling has the same colour and pattern as the I.variegata regina parent but much better form. The regina has pigment on standards which is different for a variegata but basically in terms of the lines on the falls substitute any variegata.

So whai I'm sayinf is that the variegata veining is plicata. The precence of the variagata (Umbrata ) spot changes the rim pattern to a veined pattern. One you remove the spot by crossing to a compatable species without a spot, you can transfer the plicata pattern to the rim. All variegata seem to have two of the genes which cause the spot and this is dominant so all F1 from a cross with a variegata will have this gene so no rim pattern in this group. In the F2 1/4 of the offspring will have no gene for the spot. 1/4 will have two plicata genes so one out of 16 will have both no spot and the two plicata genes and will be a rimmed plicata. The other paterns will be easy to work out with a punnett square analysis and it can be tested mathematically with a Chi-suare analysis , which is the standard test used to test punnett square fits. This can be done even with relatively small numbers allthough in this case we should have a minimum of 36 seedlings to get a good test.
If this test is done with pallida x variegata and pallida has a plicata gene , then the ratios will be much different. A math test of fit with this hypothesis should be conclusive.

Will this be convincing one way or the other?
