I was able to do most of the work with the Photoshop
Magic Wand Tool. It selects regions of similar color.
I did have to clean up some of the edges by hand using
the Lasso Tool, but you can magnify the region you
are working on so it isn't as tricky as you might think.
Photoshop lets you add and subtract from a seleted
region before you use it to change the picture, so you
can fix problems before it is too late. Even us non-surgeons
can do it.
In this case I removed the background because I wanted
to use the picture in a get well card, but the flower didn't
stand enough from the background. Most of my practice
has come from preparing grey-scale iris pictures for
our local iris society newsletter. Without color, flowers
seldom stand out well from the original background.
