I first met Aphrodite (variegated form of I. japonica) in bonsai nurseries in the early 1980s. It was usually misnamed as I. tectorum, but is so easy to recognize once you are familiar with it. It was being sold as a companion plant to grow in it's own pot or as ground cover for the larger forms of bonsai. If kept in small pots and under fed it will continue to multiply but the fans will be quite small. I have seen it as tiny as 2 1/2 to 3 inches. I can't do bonsai as they need more care then I am willing to give. But 'back then' bonsai nurseries were an amazing source of otherwise rare plants.
