The awards for species by AIS did not exist before 1990 so many selections of species were just talked about in the literature and offered for sale but not really registered. Registration was hit and miss. It was not anyones fault. No one at the time was promoting registration for species like I have for the last 20 years. And I have not really done that good of a job. SIGNA could register many of the existing unregistered cultivars so that they would be properly documented. They would not be in the awards system because they have been around for too long.

Reading about Iris 'Sulphur Queen' reminded me of the lemon yellow variation of several pseudos being tolerated in the garden, thinking they had to babies of the original 'Sulphur Queen' . Well, I just found the list of SIGNA seeds started in 1993: # 3792N193 Iris pseudacorus 'Sulphur Queen'. Coming from the SIGNA Seed Exchange, it never ocured to me to check the registrations. <grin>
