One of my techniques for borer control is to chop down the foliage to about 1"-2" from the ground.  Then discard the leaves far away from the rhizomes.  This is effectively mechanically removing the eggs before they hatch.  Now is a great time of year to do it.

I'm glad your seedlings are hanging on!  I once had seedlings from a bearded x beardless cross, but they all died within about 3 years.  I need to try those crosses again!
