Thanks, guys. I was going for a short and simple explanation for beginners, but I definitely needed to give a better definition of what a cultivar is.ÂAlthough I've found a few variants of wild plants possibly worthy of introduction, I haven't found any good irises yet (a possible exception being this virginica, which I did not collect). For those of you who want to stretch your species concepts to the breaking point, look up unisexual Ambystoma. To dramatically oversimplify: they're a monophyletic lineage of all-female parthenogenetic polyploid salamanders whose nuclear DNA is entirely derived,Âwith no recombination,ÂfromÂtwo or more ofÂany five related diploid species with whose males they must mate with.
