Re: digital SIGNA bulletin?

Sean: The American Iris Society is planning to have a virtual membership option because it could be offered at low cost bith to the society and to the member. There is a challenge to figure out how to do this since the pdf files are rather large and take a long time for dial-up folks to download. As DSL becomes more available. This becomes more and more feasible. Presently I know AIS members that only belong to one or two sections because belonging to all of them adds up to a hefty yearly membership bill. If an alternative virtual membership was available from all sections it would be more likely that members would choose to belong to more. There are lots of possibilities for solving the technical problems and decisions have not been weighed yet as to the best coarse.

Subject: [iris-species] digital SIGNA bulletin?

Since cost-cutting was mentioned in the current issue, has there been
any thought to distributing the SIGNA Bulletin via email in the form
of a pdf? It seems like this would be especially effective now that
the seed list is online, and could be opted into in place of a paper
copy. The archives and other SIGNA publications could be made
available this way as well, and prices would then only reflect
financial support of SIGNA, not the cost of copying and postage. I
understand that it might make it easier for non-members to get ahold
of publications without paying, but this can already happen if someone
is patient with a photocopier.

just a thought,
Sean Z
