My understanding is that Iris virginica var. shrevei is typically
considered a legitimate botanical variety, differing (according to the
Flora of North America) from Iris virginica var. virginica by "having
stems 2â3-branched and seldom falling to the ground after flowering,
and with capsules long-cylindric". Virginica virginica is confined to
the coastal plain, while virginica shrevei is found everywhere but.

I. Ãrobusta is the natural hybrid between shrevei and versicolor.
