Re: Iris vartanii bloom

Mine nearly experienced -20°C with no snow cover two weeks ago with the bud up, which I'm not sure it would have tolerated. I mulched it with leaves temporarily just to be safe, and did get an inch of snow at the last minute, and it was fine. The flower is pretty beat up though - partially eaten (slugs?) and then thunderstormed on.

Hi Sean

Iris vartanii is also the first in flower here at my place – 27th January is its record – it is over the ground right now and I can just see the bud. We have just finished a very long period with hard frost and 20cm of snow. We + temperatures right now and the snow is melting together with the rain there is falling.

This is a new early record for irises for me (any plant, actually). It's been in the mid-50s F since yesterday, after below-zero temps the last week or so. Flowers should not bloom in Michigan in January!
