Good question. I don't have any luck with I. domestica or the hybrids, yet dichotoma plugs along. It is one of the first things I ever grew and established from SIGNA seed.

Ken & Rod,
Here in zone 5 upstate New York, I've had dichotoma persist for about 5 years.  I transplanted it a year ago and I'm not sure if it made it, offhand.  I haven't had great luck with the hybrids, though, I can't seem to get them established in the first place.
I wonder how it got the reputation of being short lived?

I've heard that Iris dichotoma has a reputation for being short-lived.
However a plant I grew from 1998 seed is still alive. It blooms in
August, sets seed, then dies back. However, I've noticed new growth at
the base after the die-back. I'm wondering if the fact that I live in
zone 9 gives it the time it needs to prepare for winter. The new growth
does not get very big before it goes dormant. Does anyone know about this?
