I'm growing two unnamed clones of aphylla in my clay loam. It drains well enough, but isÂhard to get a trowel into in summer. I've had mixed success. Both clones have increased in the few years I've had them, but one hasn't bloomed. Last year it did something similar to what Paul describes, beginning to emerge in spring but then going dormant and not growing until summer, at which point it was vigorous. The other seems to have improved once it was better established, and set OP seed last year. It still doesn't bloom as well as other bearded species for me. I've been thinking about trying to create a "grassland" with bearded species, interplanting them with short native grasses. Obviously the grass would compete, but would also draw water and keep the irises drier when they're dormant. Sean Z Zone 6a SE Michigan |
