Re: Iris for zone 3

I'd add versicolor to that list, and reticulata and its relatives. (Pardanthopsis) dichotoma should be. Probably pumila and variegata. Maybe bucharica and other easy junos? Ruthenica is harder to find but commercially available.

Most, if not all, forms of Iris setosa will grow in zone 3. Some will grow in zone 2. This species likes to be damp. Some forms of Iris pseudacorus will grow in zone 3; note that is is very invasive in waterways and is illegal to grow in many places. Iris lactea has a wide native range and grows in some pretty cold places. Some forms should be happy in zone 3, particularly if the climate not too wet (admittedly I haven't tried growing it in a wet-summer climate). There is a Russian (Siberian) strain of the Japanese iris, Iris ensata, that might grow well in zone 3; I sent some seeds to the SIGNA seed exchange this year. Some Siberian irises, Iris siberica and Iris sanguinea, may do well in zone 3, but note that not all Siberian iris come from Siberia - some come from Europe or Japan. Some other northern Asian species are very cold tolerant, but not generally available.

A friend living in zone 3 asked me about iris species he could grow.  Anyone have suggestions?
