Subject: [iris-species] Species Iris in Zone 3

I am in zone 2b (about an hour north of the Canada-USA border in Manitoba). I try growing whatever I can from SIGNA over the years and have found many iris species to grow well, some not so well and some not at all.

The siberians and spuria species do well. Halophilla and its variants are vigorous. Ensata types survive and may even bloom but not for me and those who have had success keeping them alive and getting them to bloom say they don't bloom often. I've only managed foliage. The reticulata are iffy (you need the exact right place for them). The few I've tried are gone by the third year. The junos a definite no. No one in our area has been successful with them that I've heard about. I have several pseudacorus and a sanguinea seedling growing from SIGNA seed. They are in their 3rd year and have survived but not yet bloomed.

Hope that helps.
