Iris germanica/AMAS

In a discussion some time back I mentioned that I thought Sir Michael Foster had named Amas as a species in 1885. I finally got to the library to do some checking. It turns out that Foster collected Amas in 1885 but the name did not get published from what I can tell until 1889 and then it was stated as a variety of Iris germanica with no description given. This means a couple of things. Iris amasiana was published in the same year and which ever one was first would invalidate the other. Without a description I am not sure this would be considered a valid publication date anyway and we would have to find a later reference with description. Second unless there is some further reference using the name Iris amasia Foster would be incorrect.  It seems taxonomy is never easy. I apologize if my faulty memory has created any incorrect statements. I will have to go back and check what is now the oldest species name for tetraploid germanica like plants.
