I have a fondness for the pinks in the *pallida* types, and have
loved growing several of them over the years. I have, thanks to
Linda Mann, only one in the color range right now, but it is
conspiculously intermediate between *variegata* and *pallida* in
plant type. 'Pink Ruffles'has the *pallida* pink color from its
*pallida* type parent'Eros,' but inherits its plant habit and form
from the pod parent 'No-we-ta'which it closely resembles.
With the *pallida* pink 'Thais' the registered pollen parent of the
tetraploid 'Snow Flurry' one might expect some influence in 'Snow
Flurry's' offspring, and I believe that is exactly what shows
in 'Patience.' Judging from its parentage I suspect there is a light
cream or ivory yellow under the *pallida* pink pigment. The
resulting color is beautiful and has never been repeated to my
knowledge in a more modern iris. Part of the presentation
in 'Patience' is due to its surface texture--a feature it shares with
many 'Snow Flurry' descendants.
Mary Tharp, a hybridizer and judge from the early years of the AIS,
never believed the parentage of 'Snow Flurry.' The improbability of a
tetraploid resulting from a cross in which the diploid parent is on
the pollen side convinced her that the pollen parent was one of
the "California blues" tracing back strongly to *mesopotamica* and
other closely allied species.
I have never doubted the parentage from 'Thais,' myself, due to the
*pallida*-like stem and paper sheaths 'Snow Flurry' shows, as well as
the *pallida* foliage color and plant habit. It is so conspicuously
*pallida*-like one cannot miss noticing the resemblence.
