summer update (long)

My Gelasine elongata bloomed over a period of several weeks. It
seems each flower has resulted in a nice fat seed pod... very
reminiscent of Alophia drummondii (for those of you familiar with it).

On the other hand, my Cypella herbertii, which produced much more
attractive blooms over a much longer period of time... has apparently
not set any seeds. :-(

I had a bad case of flu in mid July and I apparently missed the bloom
on my Iris tridentata. I'm doubtful it will bloom anymore, but I'll
keep my fingers crossed.

Tigridias are in full bloom at the moment, and the Japanese beetles
are being a severe pest. Luckily, my Tigridias are blooming amidst a
huge patch of jewel-weed (Impatiens pallida) which the beetles find
more tasty. So damage to the Tigridia blooms is not as bad as it could be.

A wonderful fantastic generous donor sent me some bulbs of Alophia
veracruzana and all four of them are doing splendidly. I have my
fingers crossed they will yet bloom this season.

Several color varieties of Iris domestica (aka: Belamcanda chinensis)
are out in my prairie meadow, but they show no sign of blooming yet.

Last but not least is Cypella coelestus, (I might have the spelling
wrong, there), which is green as can be, but showing no sign of
blooming. Perhaps it's not mature enough yet.

In non-irid related news my biggest excitement is maiden bloom on
Manfreda virginiana. That sucker is over 7 feet tall!! It's a
fragrant bloom, but not a showy one. It's a superb wildflower that
more gardeners should have. It's almost as big as a yucca.

with night time temps as cool as 60!)
