Please excuse a long post but my service provider had a storm that knocked out internet service for a while. First; Yes Plant Delights sometimes introduces Iris that are not registered. Considering the thousands of plants they have brought to market I tend to excuse this, although I should try to get them registered. I will talk to Tony. Although Plant Delights does some selection from their own breeding populations, they also rely on the many plantsmen they have introduced for to register their creations. Often like the late Don Jacobs this is a sometime thing. When you are introducing hundreds of new plants each year registration fees can make a difference. Tony has spent much on plant hunting around the world and I have been told the bottom line for Plant Delights is not black every year. I have mentioned often in the past that SIGNA should plant a role in seeing that Iris species are registered. Second; âHello Yellowâ and the other dwarf âBelamcandaâ âFreckle Faceâ have been around for at least thirty years. There is in my mind a mystery associated with them. That mystery is âIs âHello Yellowâ what was originally known as Belamcanda flabellata Grey?â. Later I believe 2005 Goldblatt named a subspecies that was also small like the above but I do not remember for sure the name. It was named after the area it came from which I do not remember for sure either but I am thinking Taiwan which would make it Iris domestica subsp. taiwanensis. Since I have always had in interest in small Iris, this stuck in my mind but seems to be forgotten. I remember that the Journal I saw it in had a picture and it was dark orange spotted and not yellow. Somewhere in my files I am sure I have a copy. Are these all the same subspecies? At the moment I do not know but I think it would be interesting to know. As for the new cultivar âGone With the Windâ at present I would suspect it is a selection of Iris norrissii. The Probst hybrids sold by Joe Pye Weed's Garden are the only candy-lilies I've seen with "iris" flowers, closer to dichotoma than domestica. Sean Z |
